What to Expect Before and After Laparoscopic Surgery

Anticipating surgery can induce anxiety, but knowing exactly what to expect can significantly ease your mind. From the days leading up to your procedure to the weeks following your discharge, here is a comprehensive patient guide.

Preparing Before the Surgery

Preparation begins several days in advance. Regardless if you are scheduled for a laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal or a minimally invasive fibroid treatment, the foundational steps are similar:

  • Medical Clearances: You will undergo routine blood tests, an ECG, and perhaps a chest X-ray to ensure you are fit for general anesthesia.
  • Medication Review: Your doctor will instruct you to pause certain medications, especially blood thinners or herbal supplements, a week prior.
  • Fasting: You must strictly fast (no food or water) for 8 to 12 hours before your scheduled surgery time to prevent anesthesia complications.

The Day of the Procedure

On the day of surgery, you will check into the hospital and be directed to a pre-operative room. A nurse will start an IV line to deliver fluids and medication. The anesthesiologist will visit to explain the anesthesia process. Once wheeled into the high-tech operating suite—often equipped with advanced 3D laparoscopic surgery tools—you will be put to sleep within minutes. The actual expert gynecological surgery happens while you are completely unaware.

What Happens After

When you awake, you will be in the recovery room. Nurses will monitor your vitals closely. It is normal to feel groggy, slightly nauseous, or have a dry/sore throat from the breathing tube. You will notice tiny bandages covering your incisions on your abdomen. For more extensive diagnostic evaluations like specialized endometriosis care, mild cramping is completely normal.

Once you are fully awake, can tolerate sipping liquids, and are able to urinate, your doctor will usually permit you to go home the same day or the next morning. You will leave with a detailed schedule for pain management and a follow-up appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Should I shave the surgical area?

Do not shave your abdomen or pelvic area yourself before surgery; small nicks can harbor bacteria. The nursing staff will clip the necessary hair in the hospital if needed.

2. Can I drink a sip of water on the morning of my surgery?

Usually, absolutely no food or water is allowed. If you must take a blood pressure or essential morning pill, do so with only a tiny sip of water, but always confirm with your anesthesiologist first.

3. Will I need someone to drive me home?

Yes. You are not legally or safely allowed to drive for 24 hours after receiving general anesthesia. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home.

4. What should I wear on the day of surgery?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing with an elastic waistband (like sweatpants) that won’t press against your fresh abdominal incisions when you go home.

5. How do I manage the anxiety before surgery?

Anxiety is incredibly common. Writing down your fears and discussing them entirely with your surgeon beforehand is highly effective. Deep breathing and meditation also help.

6. Is it normal to have a sore throat after?

Yes. The endotracheal tube used during anesthesia can cause a mild sore throat for a day or two. Lozenges and warm tea help.

7. When do I see my surgeon again?

Most surgeons require a follow-up visit 7 to 14 days after surgery to review biopsies, check incisions, and clear you for extended activities.
