Wound Care, Bathing, Sleeping & Driving After Surgery

Dealing with the day-to-day logistics after a expert gynecological surgery like laparoscopy can raise a lot of questions. Proper wound care, finding a comfortable sleep position, and taking safe showers are critical stepping stones on your healing journey.

Proper Wound Care

Laparoscopy incisions are incredibly small, typically held together by surgical glue, steri-strips, or dissolvable stitches. Your primary goal is to prevent infection:

  • Leave the steri-strips (small tapes) alone until they fall off naturally.
  • Keep the area clean and dry.
  • Do not apply lotions, antibiotic ointments, or alcohol to the incisions unless explicitly instructed by your surgeon.
  • It is normal to see slight bruising or a small drop of watery blood around the incisions in the first 48 hours.

Bathing Guidelines

Showers are generally permitted 24 to 48 hours after your laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal or similar procedure. Let warm, soapy water gently run over the incisions, but do not scrub them with a washcloth. After showering, carefully pat the area completely dry with a clean towel. Absolutely no baths, swimming, or hot tubs for at least 2 to 3 weeks, as soaking severely increases infection risks.

Best Sleeping Positions

Getting a good night's rest can be challenging with abdominal soreness. The best position is on your back. Prop your head and shoulders up slightly with pillows, and place another pillow under your knees. This "recliner" position takes all the tension off your abdominal muscles. If you must sleep on your side, hug a sturdy pillow against your abdomen for counter-pressure.

When is Driving Safe?

You may not drive until you are completely off all prescription narcotic pain relievers and can safely execute sudden movements (like slamming on the brakes or sharply turning the wheel) without wincing in pain. For most simple procedures, this happens around 1 to 2 weeks post-surgery. Even if you feel fine, reflexes remain impaired during the first week. If you had extensive specialized endometriosis care, you might wait slightly longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is it normal for my incision to itch?

Yes. As nerves regenerate and the tissue heals, you will experience itching. Never scratch directly on the incisions.

2. When do the stitches need to be removed?

Most laparoscopic surgeons use dissolvable stitches internally and glue externally, meaning nothing needs to be removed. If non-dissolvable stitches are used, you’ll have an appointment set for approx 7-10 days later.

3. Can I wear a seatbelt?

Yes, you must wear a seatbelt when riding in cars. To minimize discomfort, place a small, soft pillow between the lap belt and your abdomen.

4. What should I do if the incision is weeping fluid?

A few drops of watered-down blood on day 1 or 2 is normal. However, if the fluid is thick, yellow/green, or smells foul, contact your doctor immediately as it indicates an infection.

5. Can I use silicon scar sheets to prevent scarring?

Silicon scar sheets work wonderfully, but you must wait until the incisions are 100% healed and closed (usually 4 to 6 weeks) before applying them.

6. Is it safe to be a passenger on a long drive?

If you have a very long drive home from the hospital, stop every hour to get out and walk gently for 5 minutes. This severely lowers your risk of blood clots.

7. Can I sleep on my stomach?

You should avoid sleeping on your stomach for at least two weeks to avoid immense pressure on the healing abdominal fascia.
